Can strawberries whiten your teeth?

Can strawberries naturally whiten your teeth?

Can strawberries naturally whiten your teeth?

I was linked to this page by a friend, which essentially says that strawberries can whiten teeth. I have heard of this before- I remember as a kid my friend and I would take a bite out of our strawberries, and rub the fleshy part over our teeth. Repeat for every strawberry in the punnet until we finished all of them. I didn’t see any immediate change in my teeth so I stopped doing it- but perhaps I should have continued?

Is whey protein bad for you?

one of the many whey protein supplements on the market

One of the many whey protein supplements on the market

Just about every guy I know who goes to the gym is either taking, or is thinking about taking protein supplements. This review explains that protein supplementation immediately after resistance training can enhance muscle hypertrophy. Furthermore, taking protein may enhance recovery from exercise, or decrease muscle damage.

Whey protein is one of the most popular protein supplements on the market. Whey is a whole protein found in milk, the other being casein. We ingest and absorb protein into our body, break it down into amino acids and then use it to build our own body’s proteins, such as muscle.

But is it safe to take protein supplements?

Chia seeds for weight loss and health

are chia seeds as amazing as they have been made out to be?

Chia seeds (from the plant Salvia hispanica) have been endorsed by many as a superfood. And rightly so – Chia seeds have one of the highest omega-3 fatty acid content of any food and is one of the most powerful whole food antioxidants we know.

When chia seeds are added to water, they expand to form a gel. There are claims that when this occurs in your stomach, you will feel more full and be able to lose weight.

Should I eat before or after my morning workout to lose fat?

morning runs are great... but when should you eat around your run?

Morning runs are great… but when should you eat?

When I just started getting into exercise a few years ago, I was really interested in maximising my efforts to lose fat. In every magazine I opened I would head to the fitness section. One magazine would recommend working out after eating, others would recommend before eating, others would recommend working out after dinner or before breakfast… There are way too many opinions out there from self-professed gurus.

A lot of these gurus claim that working out in the morning on an empty stomach maximises fat loss. It DOES make sense after all- when you wake up your body is starved of sugars  and if you work out it should make sense that you should burn fat.

The results of this study however shows that eating a light meal before your morning workout is the best way to lose fat.

Co-enzyme Q10 as an anti-aging agent for skin?

SANA Nameraka Honpo Q10 Soy Milk Moisturizing Milk

CoQ10 in SANA Moisturiser

I first heard about Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in one of my pathophysiology lectures a few years ago. The lecturer was saying “they have started putting it this enzyme into cosmetics so that’s very lucky for this generation as it’s very effective!”

So surely if my lecturer (who does scientific research for a living) was supportive of these cosmetics, surely there was something real behind the use of this ingredient.

Does sitting on an exercise ball really help with posture? Should I replace my office chair?

the all popular exercise ball

the all popular exercise ball

The exercise ball (also known as a swiss ball, or pezzi ball) has come into popular use in the past decade or so. In the past it was purely used in more specialised physical therapy, but nowadays it is seen in gyms, yoga classes, and even as office chairs. It is thought to improve posture, but read this before you go throw out your office chair…

Welcome to my blog!

My name is Emily and I am a medical student living in Brisbane, Australia.

When I am not studying, I am usually found reading beauty and fitness blogs or magazines.

There is a ridiculous amount of conflicting information out there. A lot of what I have read conflicts with other online sources, or what I know about human physiology, or what the scientific research says. And on the other hand, some completely ridiculous sounding claims can actually have a lot of evidence!

Some topics I will be covering soon include:

– Does sitting on an exercise ball really help with posture?

– Does coenzyme Q10 work as an anti-aging agent?

– When is the best time to work out for weight loss?

But first I have to finish my case report, stay tuned…
